This page is for those of you who are curious to know
what makes me, Mark Marderosian tick and my profession as illustrator.
When I was seven, a few newspaper cartoonists
gave my Dad some of their original comic strip pages.
He brought them home and showed them to me.
I was thrilled at the art, the ink lines and the hand-lettering.
Everything about them was amazing. To think that human beings
had drawn these! That's why I also I loved the Walt Disney
animated films. They were drawn by human hands!
Well, I was very inspired to say the least.
I began to draw every day. Slowly, I became better and decided
this is what I wanted to do with my life. Not only to draw but
I wanted to bring joy to others through my drawings,
the way those
magical comic strips did for me!
I started drawing comic strips for my friends and
relatives starring...my friends and relatives!
Everyday I would deliver a new comic strip I had
printed out to some of the neighbor's mail boxes.
Then I drew some cartoons for the school newspaper and
for a small greeting card company. Slowly, with some
huge speed bumps along the way, I would get a cartoon
or illustration published here or there.
I went to art school at the Massachusetts College of Art,
majoring in film animation. After graduating I found myself working
at a local animation studio! What fun that was! After doing
animation for six months, I was promoted to managing some
really talented people. The highlight was being able to direct
McDonald's animated
commercials, among other large accounts.
Soon after, I started drawing illustrations for books and coloring books;
especially coloring books. Hundreds and hundreds of coloring book pages!
Ever since then I have been freelancing on a full-time basis for over
fifteen years for many of the major studios. It's a great continuous
ride and the best part
is working with the nicest people around.
It is very satisfying to think that because of the sheer volume of work
and endless reprinting, everyday at least one person somewhere
in the world, is enjoying one of my drawings or coloring one
of my many coloring pages.
